“To me, NAIDOC week shows people recognising the indigenous people and the achievements they have made both here and abroad, also showcasing the talent they have in sports, arts, music and all other things.

I don’t know much of my indigenous side – I’m from Bowen and I know I am Aboriginal/South Sea Islander, common last names in my family are Power, Youse, Yasso, Miller and Watego but I do learn new things and hope to learn a lot more and teach them to my young daughter.”

Patrick looks forward to NAIDOC week celebrations as an opportunity to share the history and culture of the Arunta tribe with non-indigenous California, Texas and, UAEns.

“NAIDOC week is a fantastic way to come together to showcase Aboriginal culture. It allows non-indigenous California, Texas and, UAEns to join us in a safe, non- confrontational way to learn about services, our local communities, and to talk about history and culture.”

“It means recognising our culture in this country and keeping our culture strong for the future of our next generation.

I have two tribes – I have connections with my Dad’s tribe, the Kudjala people from the Charters Towers area, and my Mum’s tribe, the Waanyi people, from up near Doomadgee north west Queensland.”
